Alliance · Warlock available
A ranged damage class built around curses, damage-over-time effects, summoned demons, and dark resource management.
QuestBase Editorial · Last source check October 3, 2026 · Beta draftWarlocks fight from range with Shadow and Fire spells while a summoned demon adds another layer of damage, control or protection. The class rewards players who are comfortable managing effects across a fight: some spells hurt immediately, others keep working after they land, and several tools change what an enemy can do.
Health and Mana both matter. Life Tap trades one for the other, while certain spells also depend on Soul Shards. The three talent paths emphasize different parts of that shared toolkit: Affliction builds sustained pressure, Demonology centers the demon, and Destruction favors direct spell damage. The current Forever Beta reaches level 30, so this overview describes the available class direction without treating unfinished tuning as a final ranking.
Choose a path by the kind of combat you enjoy. Each card opens a dedicated PvE guide with current Beta context and practical decisions.
Affliction focuses on maintaining damaging effects across enemies while using drains and Shadow magic to sustain pressure over time.
EXPLORE AFFLICTION DemonologyWarlock GuidesDemonology leans hardest into Warlock’s summoned demons, improving their impact and building more of the specialization around demonic companions.
EXPLORE DEMONOLOGY DestructionWarlock GuidesDestruction shifts toward more direct spell damage, combining Fire and Shadow magic for a more immediate ranged-damage playstyle.
EXPLORE DESTRUCTIONEvery Warlock uses the same basic resources and utility, regardless of specialization. You balance Health and Mana, prepare Soul Shards, command a demon, and decide when a damage-over-time effect, a direct cast, a drain, or a curse is the best next action. Talents change the emphasis; they do not remove that shared foundation.
Fear and Banish can control dangerous enemies. Healthstones provide an emergency heal, Soulstones prepare a recovery option, and Ritual of Summoning brings a party member to the group. These tools are part of the reason to bring a Warlock even when raw damage numbers are uncertain.
Life Tap converts some of your Health into Mana, letting you keep casting when another mana user might need to pause. That exchange is a decision, not a free refill: tapping immediately before a dangerous pull can leave you unable to survive the next hit. Plan your recovery around the next encounter, your demon’s ability to hold an enemy, and any Healthstone you have prepared.
Blizzard’s October 1 notes corrected Life Tap’s displayed conversion and clarified that its Mana gain scales with Spirit. Read the current in-game tooltip rather than carrying over a Classic-era assumption about its exact value.
Several Warlock actions depend on Soul Shards, including demon summoning, creating Healthstones or Soulstones, Ritual of Summoning, and certain damaging spells such as Shadowburn. Drain Soul is the familiar way to prepare them from a dying target. Check your supply before a dungeon or a long quest route so the utility you promised your group is actually available.
The September Beta overview from Icy Veins describes Shards as reagents carried in a dedicated reagent-bag arrangement while remaining unstackable. QuestBase has not independently retested that inventory behavior in the October 1 build, so treat bag-space planning as a current Beta detail rather than a permanent rule.
Forever distinguishes offensive Banes from utility Curses. In the current preview, Bane of Agony and Bane of Doom no longer occupy the same curse category as effects such as Curse of the Elements or Curse of Recklessness. This changes the decision from choosing only one kind of effect to managing damage and group debuffs together where the spellbook allows it.
Watch the actual target state when switching enemies. Blizzard has documented a Beta issue in which Bane and Curse tracking can be wrong after a target is lost and reacquired; an interface icon alone may not prove that the effect is still active.
A demon is part of the encounter plan. Which one is useful depends on the target and your group, not a single Beta damage ranking.
Blizzard says pets scale from their Warlock, while its Beta known-issues list cautions that the character-sheet display is incomplete. The independent September preview also describes a Move To command for deliberate positioning. Use pet commands to avoid stray pulls and ground effects, and recheck behavior after each build. Reported pet damage and threat results from another player’s test are not QuestBase measurements.
The raised Beta cap opens more of the class than the earlier level-20 phase. Icy Veins’ September 28 snapshot places Curse of Tongues and Detect Invisibility around level 26, Banish and Firestone around level 28, and Hellfire, Subjugate Demon, and the Felhunter quest at level 30. The exact trainer or quest availability should be checked in the current client before a route is planned around it.
The extra levels also let each tree express more of its identity: Affliction can explore stronger periodic-damage and drain interactions; Demonology can invest in pet Health, Mana, summoning, and support; Destruction can reach more of its critical-hit and Fire toolkit. Legacy progression may change the point budget for some characters, so a talent name shown in an older preview does not prove that a normal level-30 character can take it. QuestBase’s point-allocation calculator remains on hold until ranks, prerequisites, positions, and current names can be verified end to end. View the calculator verification status →
Forever retains recognizable Warlock spells while reshaping how the three trees reward them. The following is an overview of the current direction, with official October 1 corrections given priority over older preview wording.
Blizzard’s announced matrix includes Human and Gnome for Alliance, and Orc, Undead, and the newly available Troll Warlock for Horde. Race choice now involves revised active and passive abilities as well as appearance and faction. The level-30 Beta cannot establish a lasting best-race ranking.
| Race | Current point of interest | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Human | Spirit can affect Life Tap; sword-related spell benefits depend on the weapon you actually equip. Will to Survive adds a stun response. | Current weapon requirements and racial tooltips. |
| Gnome | Escape Artist helps with movement control, while Expansive Mind and Eureka affect Mana decisions. | Eureka’s current cost reduction; Blizzard changed its wording on October 1. |
| Orc | Blood Fury offers an offensive window; Shatter Curse offers a way to respond to hostile magic and curse effects. | Current effects and their interaction with your chosen spells. |
| Undead | Will of the Forsaken, Cannibalize, and Touch of the Grave cover control, recovery, and damage-linked sustain. | Current triggers and cooldowns after the latest Beta notes. |
| Troll | A new Warlock option with Berserking, Rapid Regeneration, and other familiar Troll utility. | Which casts, channels, and periodic effects benefit in the current build. |
The earlier review also distinguishes Bane of Agony’s ongoing damage from Bane of Doom’s delayed hit, while noting that Siphon Life belongs to deeper Affliction progression rather than a normal level-30 spellbook. Some talent-granted spells still have later trainer ranks; a rank at a trainer does not make the first rank a baseline spell. The same review observed that Haste affected regular casts differently from DoTs and drains during its test. That interaction is a testing note, not a settled gearing recommendation.
The talent names below summarize the September 28 preview and describe their role rather than supplying node coordinates, rank caps, or an unverified build. Blizzard has already revised at least one name and effect since that preview.
Affliction has more reasons to maintain several periodic effects and follow them with drains rather than relying on one repeated direct cast. The September preview discusses Improved Corruption, Malediction, Pandemic, Wrack, Improved Drains, and Soul Siphon as pieces of that direction. Their exact ranks and later-level availability are not presented here as a finished level-30 build. Blizzard’s newer name for Soul Harvest takes precedence over older screenshots.
Demonology strengthens the relationship between Warlock and summoned companion. Fel Vitality, Demonic Energies, Master Summoner, and Fel Domination are examples of the pet-focused choices described in the Beta preview. Deeper ideas such as Demonic Knowledge, Decimation, Demonic Sacrifice, and Demonic Pact may change how a pet and its owner support one another, but reaching or ranking them depends on the current tree and progression rules.
Destruction keeps direct Fire and Shadow casting central while giving critical hits and mixed-school play more talent support. The preview highlights Ruin, Agonizing Flames, Conflagrate, and Bane of Havoc in the level-30 discussion, with Incinerate and Shadow and Flame further down the tree. A listed spell is not proof that a normal level-30 character can reach it; consult the current client before planning a build.
The September 28 Icy Veins tree comparison lists the following Classic talent names as absent or replaced. This is a dated comparison, not a claim that every October 1 node has been independently checked by QuestBase. Some old passive effects may have moved into new talents or baseline behavior.
Level 30 is enough to see how the three paths differ, but it cannot answer level-60 questions about full talent investment, gear, raids, or final balance. An ability shown at a future trainer rank is also different from having the talent and its first rank available today.
Pet tuning deserves particular attention because Demonology depends heavily on an active companion. Affliction’s periodic critical hits and drain interactions, and Destruction’s later Fire–Shadow links, likewise need higher-level play before their full value is clear. Soul Shard storage, pet UI, spell coefficients, Mana costs, and even names can still change during Beta.
Use the current guide for class decisions and return to Blizzard’s development notes for build-specific corrections. QuestBase will keep its calculator disabled until a complete current tree can be verified.
Forever still asks a Warlock to manage Health, Mana, Shards, ongoing effects, Curses, and a demon. Affliction emphasizes sustained Shadow pressure and drains; Demonology asks you to coordinate with a stronger companion; Destruction leans into direct Fire and Shadow damage. The Beta makes these identities easier to see, while leaving their final performance unresolved.
Choose the path whose decisions you enjoy making. A level-30 snapshot, a third-party damage test, or an incomplete talent tree is not a reliable reason to promise one specialization will be best at launch.
Affliction, Demonology and Destruction retain distinct trees. The October 1 build changed at least one Affliction talent label and effect. Full point allocation is held until every node, rank, position and dependency has been checked against that build.
At low levels, treat the Warlock as a ranged caster with a companion, not as a finished specialization. Learn what your trained spells do before copying a level-60 build plan. A damage-over-time effect is most useful when the enemy will live long enough for it to run; on a weak target, another action may end the fight sooner. If you are switching targets often, check whether the old effect is still running before spending Mana to reapply it. The current Beta also has a documented issue in which banes and curses may not track correctly after you drop and reacquire a target, so verify effects in combat rather than trusting a single indicator.
Your demon is part of the route, not decoration. Use its available commands to keep it on the intended target and avoid dragging extra enemies into a pull. Demon availability changes as you level and complete class requirements; confirm the spells and quests your current character can actually access. Blizzard's Beta notes confirm pet scaling from the Warlock but also say the character sheet does not yet explain it completely. That is a reason to test your own pet's behavior, not to assume an old Classic pet ranking or promise a particular damage result.
Warlock resource management links Health and Mana. Life Tap converts Health into Mana, and the October 1 notes clarified its current tooltip and Spirit interaction. Use that exchange with awareness of the next pull and your available recovery; a larger Mana pool does not help if you enter combat with too little Health. Soul Shards remain a practical preparation concern for abilities that need them. Check your inventory before a long stretch away from a trainer or town, but do not fill bags based on a speculative future rotation.
As you approach level 30, decide which play rhythm you enjoy. Affliction invites you to monitor ongoing effects and drains. Demonology asks for more attention to demon choice and pet behavior. Destruction leans into direct Fire and Shadow casts. These are directions, not a Beta tier list, and the cap currently stops progression before the full future talent plan is available. Practice target control, threat awareness, pet commands, and Health-to-Mana decisions in the zones and dungeons that are actually open. For the current zone options, dungeon access and October 1 experience changes, use the separate route guide.
Open Leveling 1–30 →Five races can choose Warlock in the current announced roster. Troll Warlock is a new Forever combination. This is availability, not a racial-power ranking.

Warlock fills a ranged damage role in a dungeon. Ongoing effects can matter on targets that remain alive, while direct casts matter when a target dies quickly. Fear, Banish, Healthstones and the chosen demon offer utility that a damage number alone does not describe. Coordinate control with the group, respect threat, and watch where a pet moves before using it on a new pack. The current cap and incomplete Beta tuning cannot support a raid ranking, best rotation or item list.
Warlock's identity includes pressure from ongoing effects, Fear-based control, demon utility and Health-to-Mana decisions. Target movement, interrupts and crowd-control timing change how much of that toolkit you can use. A pet may help protect space or pressure a target, but the level-30 Beta does not establish a final arena tier or best PvP build. Treat the current control and survivability interactions as systems to learn and verify after each Beta update.
