Affliction Warlock Guide

Affliction turns time into damage. Choose it when you enjoy judging how long an enemy will live, maintaining several effects, and using drains to recover while your demon keeps pressure on the target.

01 / INTRODUCTION

Affliction in the Level-30 Beta

The important decision is whether another ongoing effect has time to pay off. Against a durable enemy, a bane and Corruption can keep working while you use a drain or Shadow spell. Against a nearly defeated enemy, applying a fresh effect may cost more time and Mana than it returns.

WoW Forever separates banes and curses, so offensive pressure and group debuff choice are different decisions. The current Beta has a known effect-tracking issue after losing and reacquiring a target. Confirm what is actually active before refreshing a spell; do not rely on one tracker alone.

At a glance

  • Sustained Shadow pressure
  • Effect tracking and target selection
  • Health and Mana management
02 / LEVELING

Leveling as Affliction

Let your summoned demon engage first when you need it to hold an enemy. Add effects that will last long enough to matter, then decide whether a drain, direct cast, or wand attack is the efficient finish. On short fights, fewer setup casts often make a cleaner route.

Keep spell ranks trained and check the class quests that unlock your demons. Carry the Soul Shards required for your planned utility, and use Life Tap only when the Health cost leaves room for the next pull. A drain can restore Health, but it is not a reason to enter danger at very low Health.

In a dungeon, coordinate the curse with your group and watch threat. An effect on a target that dies immediately contributes little; durable bosses and elites give Affliction more time to express its strengths.

03 / TALENTS

Talent direction at level 30

The September Icy Veins Beta guide discusses talents that reinforce periodic damage, critical interactions, and an instant Shadow Bolt opportunity. Blizzard's October 1 notes subsequently renamed Soul Harvesting to Soul Harvest and corrected its Mana-regeneration effect. That change is enough to treat an older point-by-point tree as a historical snapshot.

QuestBase has not checked every node, rank, prerequisite and position against the October 1 client. Use the current in-game tree to choose between effect strength, casting flexibility and resource support. We are withholding an exact point allocation until the full tree can be verified.

04 / COMBAT

Spells and combat decisions

Before the pull, make sure the intended demon is active and know who will hold threat. For a durable target, choose the group-relevant curse and apply a bane and other ongoing effects while there is still enough fight left for them to tick. Then spend open casting time on drains or Shadow damage according to your Health and Mana.

On a target swap, inspect the new target rather than automatically repeating every setup spell. If an effect has not expired, let it keep working. If the enemy is close to death, finish it with a lower-cost action. Use Life Tap between safe windows, and collect Soul Shards when the opportunity fits your route.

This is a decision sequence, not a fixed damage ranking or a claim about an optimal October Beta rotation.

05 / EQUIPMENT

Gear, stats and consumables

Compare caster items by the spells they actually help. General spell power supports a broader toolkit than a school-specific bonus; Shadow-only damage does not improve Fire spells. Spell hit matters when a resisted cast costs both Mana and time. Intellect expands your Mana pool, while Spirit may affect the current Life Tap exchange described in Blizzard's corrected tooltip.

Do not treat a September best-in-slot list as current. Dungeon loot, crafted items and their Beta tuning need a fresh check before an item recommendation is published. Keep a usable wand, appropriate cloth armor, recovery supplies and a Healthstone for the content you can currently access.

06 / QUICK ANSWERS

Affliction questions

When is Affliction a good choice?

When you enjoy sustained damage, monitoring effects, and adapting each pull to the target's expected lifetime.

Should every target receive every damage-over-time spell?

No. An effect that barely has time to tick may be less useful than an immediate finish.

Is there a verified level-30 build here?

No. Exact talent allocation remains on hold while the current Beta tree is checked.

Sources and current limits

Last source check: October 3, 2026. The Blizzard October 1 Beta notes and known issues control patch-specific statements. The Icy Veins Affliction guide, dated September 17, supplies a third-party comparison for topic coverage; its exact builds and item rankings are not presented here as verified current advice.

October 3 update: Added this original specialization article and connected it to the Warlock overview. The talent calculator remains on hold until current-client validation is complete.
