Start with the main skill and its tag
Check what the selected skill actually is in the current version: Core, Summon, Werebear, projectile, blood or another tag. The appearance of an attack does not prove its tag. When Blizzard changes a tag in patch notes, the value of a conditional affix or Unique may change with it.
Separate base strength from conditional strength
A higher item power or attractive headline roll can be less useful than an effect you activate every fight. State the condition in plain language, then check whether the build's rotation meets it. If it requires a state you rarely maintain, value it accordingly.
Protect survival and resource flow
If the character cannot remain in range, an offensive affix may not improve completed runs. Likewise, an expensive spender needs a reliable resource budget before an extra damage condition matters. Make these baseline properties visible in your gear comparison.
Know where a target can come from
For a named Unique, inspect the live source information and any boss-specific route before spending summon materials. The relationship between an item and a boss can change with a season or patch. Farming the right activity at a sustainable difficulty is better than relying on an old drop chart.
Craft with a written goal
The Horadric Cube and Talisman expand customization, but each operation has its own eligibility and preservation rules. Write down the exact property you want and what may be lost, then confirm the current recipe in game. Do not use a premium conversion merely because it is available.
