Pick the item before the boss
Name the slot or effect that solves your build's problem, then identify its currently documented source. An old loot table can send you to the wrong encounter. If the target has several possible sources, compare their access requirements and material costs.
Check the summon and difficulty requirements
Before consuming materials, inspect the boss's current summon rules and whether the party can complete the fight reliably. Do not assume that an older tier name or cost remains valid. Decide how many attempts you can afford without interrupting other upgrades.
Bring a true bossing loop
A pack-clearing build may lose its resource engine when no ordinary enemies die. Test your single-target attack, cooldown cycle and recovery action before entering an expensive encounter. Retain defense for unavoidable mechanics and avoid using every mobility skill merely to chase damage.
Measure the whole encounter
A high opening burst does not prove sustained boss performance. Track whether damage continues after the first window, whether you can return to range safely and whether the setup survives a missed cast. Change one build component at a time.
Decide when to stop farming
Set an acceptable outcome in advance: a usable version of the item, a stronger roll or enough materials for another route. If the expected benefit is small compared with a more reliable gear upgrade, move to that activity. Recheck patch notes when a target item or boss rule changes.
