Quick answer
Check tomorrow's forecast on the TV. If rain is forecast, water all outdoor crops today and submit the can to the Blacksmith before closing. Rain waters outdoor crops while the can is away. The upgrade takes two nights, so you can collect it on the following day.

Alternative: the 27th
After watering anything that must finish on the 28th, the 27th can be a convenient hand-off day because most crops die at the season change. Check for multi-season crops before doing this; those continue into the next season and still need care.

Things to check first
- Rain does not water crops indoors, including the Greenhouse and Garden Pots.
- A missed watering day pauses growth; it does not kill an immature crop.
- Festival days can change your access to Clint, so check the calendar before relying on an exact pickup day.
- If sprinklers already cover your crops, the timing is less restrictive.

A safe rain-window example
Suppose the TV forecasts rain for tomorrow. Water your outdoor crops today, then take the can to Clint while the Blacksmith is open. Tomorrow's rain covers those outdoor crops. The following day, return to collect the upgraded can and water anything still growing. The wiki describes the upgrade as taking two nights; it is not ready on the rainy day itself.
This plan assumes you can actually visit the Blacksmith on the hand-off and collection days. A festival may interrupt access. After the Community Center is restored, Clint's Friday schedule also changes, so a Wednesday hand-off can mean Saturday collection. Check the calendar and schedule instead of relying only on the weather icon.

Upgrade costs and coverage
Each upgrade requires the previous tier. Coverage below is the maximum charged area, not the area watered by a quick tap.
| Tier | Cost | Maximum area |
|---|---|---|
| Copper | 2,000g + 5 Copper Bars | 3 tiles in a line |
| Steel | 5,000g + 5 Iron Bars | 5 tiles in a line |
| Gold | 10,000g + 5 Gold Bars | 3 × 3 tiles |
| Iridium | 25,000g + 5 Iridium Bars | 3 × 6 tiles |

When the 27th is not safe
The end-of-season trick works for most seasonal crops because they will die when the calendar turns over. It is less convenient if you are tending a crop that survives into the next season, such as Corn or Wheat. Indoor crops and winter crops that need water are also outside the simple rain rule. If any of those apply, plan another way to water them, wait for sprinkler coverage, or postpone the upgrade.

Is the upgrade worth it?
A copper can can water up to three tiles in a line; later upgrades cover more. The value depends on how many tiles you still water by hand. If sprinklers cover most of your field, you may prefer to spend your bars and gold elsewhere first.
The upgrade is most useful when watering is taking a large part of your morning. Compare that time saving with other uses for the same metal bars. For a small field with reliable sprinklers, you can defer the can without blocking progress.
